A huge thank you to everyone who attended the 7th Annual TEMBO luncheon on Saturday, December 4 2011!

Over 120 friends of TEMBO gathered at the First Unitarian Church for TEMBO’s largest fundraiser of the year. The day included an informative presentation on maternal health in Tanzania by Dr. Gail Webber, a silent auction, African marketplace, and Tanzanian lunch.

Almost $14, 000 was raised to help support TEMBO’s work in Tanzania, thank you!

After a Busy Summer in Tanzania and Canada TEMBO looks ahead to Fall 2011

Summer 2011 was a very busy time for TEMBO both in Canada and in Tanzania. The season started off with very two very successful fundraising efforts, the Great Glebe Garage Sale and TEMBO’s annual plant sale. A huge thank you to all the TEMBO supporters who worked tirelessly to help with both of these events. Thanks to your efforts we were about to raise important funds to support TEMBOs work and generate greater awareness of our programs in Tanzania. TEMBO returned once again to Westfest in June. The popular annual event is always a great opportunity for TEMBO to connect with many of our longstanding supporters and to meet many new friends. Thank you to everyone who stopped by the booth to lend a hand or say hello. In Tanzania, the 2011 TEMBO English Camp (TEC) was a tremendous success with the girls participating in a 3 week residential language camp designed to help them improve their English and boost their self confidence as they prepare to continue with their secondary school studies. As well, the August 2011 edition of ‘Traveling with TEMBO’ will provide travellers with memories to last a lifetime as they see first hand the impacts of TEMBO’s ongoing projects as well as enjoy an amazing safari through the national parks of Tanzania.

Project TEMBO’s 6th Annual December Luncheon will be held on December
4th at First Unitarian Church, 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. African
Marketplace, Silent Auction, and Treasure Chest Raffle. This year
Order of Canada Recipient, UN Security Council Expert, and author, Ian
Smillie will speak on “The Importance of Micro-Finance Programs in
Developing Countries”. Tickets are $40.00 (includes lunch and $20.00
tax reciept) or $20.00 without lunch. Call 613-406-6002 for tickets or
information. Register early – this event sells out each year.

Westfest – Incredible Volunteer Support

On Saturday and Sunday Project TEMBO set up a Marketplace and information area at Westfest, Ottawa’s best festival. This event is always a great opportunity to meet so many friends and make new contacts. This year was no exception. Volunteer support was exceptional and people got to meet the many “new faces of TEMBO”. Thanks so much to all of you who helped in any way. Special thanks to Tony Lapage of Hardy Mattress and Feather in Westboro Village. For a second year Tony allowed TEMBO to use his truck for overnight storage of our Marketplace and canopy. This is a huge help. The event raised about $2700.00 for projects in Tanzania. See you next year!

Ottawa Tween Club Fundraiser

Janis Hass and Patti Church of Ottawa co-founded the Tween Club five years ago to provide programming and activities for girls in the 9-12 age group. Each year the Tween Club raises funds for a particular charity. Lucky for TEMBO to be chosen by the Club this year! On May 29, 2010, the girls held a multi-event at Dovercourt Community Center that included a garage sale, bake sale, and book sale. It also included fun activities like apple-bobbing, and jumping inside a inflated large castle. At the end of the day the Tween Club raised $430.00 for girls in Tanzania. Thanks to Janis, Patti, all the organizers, and to the Tween Club girls for showing how to have fun and raise money at the same time!

Fundraising Dinner a Delicious Success

On Saturday, May 29, 2010, Mary MacDonald of Ottawa Ontario opened her home to 30 guests to share scrumptous food and great conversation about TEMBO. Mary worked with friends and colleagues Ruth McSherry and Jackie Challender to prepare and coordinate a fabulous feast of Indian dishes and home-made desserts. We’re very grateful for the time these three women spent putting this enjoyable event on that raised over $1100.00 for our projects in Tanzania.

Cameras Needed for English Camp in Tanzania

Virginia Taylor and Marian Roks are still looking for small digital cameras and memory cards for the June 14 trip to Tanzania. They are launching the first TEMBO English Language Camp for the girls we sponsor in Secondary School. The cameras will be used by the girls to create books for learning. 15 cameras would work perfectly. If you have one you are no longer using, please contact Virginia at wdtay125@rogers.com.

Great Glebe Garage Sale Nets Big Results

Maureen Law and friends set up tables at the Great Glebe Garage Sale in Ottawa for a second year in a row. This years success surpassed last years with a final tally of $1600.00! This money will go towards the Longido Community Library & Resource Center Project. Thank you Maureen and all those who donated time or goods.

This year Patricia Mercer also joined in the effort on her street in the Glebe. Pat sold plants, books, and many other items totaling $231.00 to support projects for girls and women in Tanzania. Thanks bunches, Pat!

TEMBO Tanzania June – September Project Visit

Between June 16 and September 4, Project TEMBO Canada Board members will be visiting projects in Longido and Kimokouwa. Trips like this include a variety of activities: gathering and updating project information, implementing the Strategic Plan, developing staff skills, coordinating activities (during this trip an English Camp will be launched and a summer Traveling with TEMBO program will take place), strengthening partnerships, hosting volunteers and donors, trouble-shooting, and doing lots of the unexpected. Project TEMBO Canada Board members Marian Roks, Virginia Taylor, and Jo Marchant will be involved in this visit.
