Project TEMBO wishes to thank everyone who contributed to our recent fundraisers. Thanks to everyone who donate to, worked at, and purchased from, TEMBO’s sale at the Great Glebe Garage sale. Despite the chilly weather more than $1300 was raised to support TEMBO!

Also, once again this year, students in the Child and Youth Worker program at Algonquin College held a series of fundraisers for TEMBO throughout the school year. Thanks to their efforts more than $4800 was raised to support the new library TEMBO is building in Orbomba.

And while final numbers are still being tallied we’d like to thank everyone who stopped by TEMBO’s booth at Westfest again this year.

Thank you to our volunteers and supporters for making these events possible!

Roof Complete on New Orbomba Library

We have a roof! The construction is progressing well, and the roof was recently installed.

Paulina Simayani, our Project Coordinator, is at the site p daily to be sure thw work is going as planned.

Paulina reports that everyone is getting excited for the completion of the new Orbomba library!

The construction of our community library at Orbomba continues!

The work is being carefully monitored by many members of the community: the District Engineer inspects regularly and is pleased with the quality of the construction; Victor Kibati, the head teacher at Orbomba School is on site every day and very happy about the idea of having a library at his school, and Paulina and Leah, Tembo staffers, are meeting regularly with the construction workers, the engineer and Victor.

The foundation is now complete and the walls are beginning to define the shape of the building. Exciting times!

Algonquin College Students & Hockeyfest Support TEMBO!

Once again this year students enrolled in Algonquin College’s Social Service Worker program took time away from the books to organize several fundraising activities in support of TEMBO. Thanks to the students’ hard work, $4,900 was raised to support TEMBO’s programs in Tanzania.

Students in the Social Service Worker program organized several fundraisers throughout the school year.

For the 5th year in a row the Elder Skateman hosted Hockeyfest, a friendly event for 60+ and 70+ recreational hockey players in Ottawa. This year a portion of the proceeds, totalling $4900, was generously donated to TEMBO.

TEMBO sincerely thanks the Algonquin College students and the Elder Skateman for their generous support.

Construction Underway on New Orbomba Community Library

Orbomba is a new Primary School in Longido. They have 7 teachers and about 450 students. The school does not have running water or electricity, but more importantly, they have very few resources. Working with the local education officials, TEMBO is building a Community Library on the site. It will be the size of 1 classroom and will serve the school and the surrounding community. We have agreed with the community that we will construct the building, furnish it and put in books and other resources. They will provide supervision during school hours and staff in the after hours so that this will serve as a community library to the surrounding villagers.

Work began on this project in October 2012, and recently a signing ceremony was held to formalize the contract between TEMBO Trust and the District of Longido.

Construction has now officially begun, with the first step being to dig a trench that will become the foundation for the building.

Trinity Jubliee Foundation & Aiyana Children’s Foundation Support TEMBO!

Project TEMBO is thrilled to announce that this year the Trinity Jubilee Foundation, in Ottawa, ON will be raising funds this year to support TEMBO’s community libraries and that the Aiyana Children’s Foundation in Calgary, AB will be raising funds to support education sponsorship for girls.

TEMBO is grateful to these organizations, and all our supporters. Without you, TEMBO’s work to help girls and women in Tanzania would not be possible.

Annual Luncheon a Success

Project TEMBO would like to thank everyone who helped to make our annual luncheon a tremendous success on December 1st .

Thanks to your support, more than $13,500 was raised to support TEMBO projects in northern Tanzania. 125 friends of TEMBO attended our largest fundraiser of the year and enjoyed a fashion show of colourful kangas and a traditional song, a project update on TEMBO’s work, as well as the African marketplace, raffle and silent auction. A delicious lunch was catered by Red Apron and students from the Child & Youth worker program at Algonquin College were also recognized for their ongoing support of TEMBO through their annual fundraisers at the college and in the community.

We sincerely appreciate the efforts of all the volunteers who helped before, during, and after the luncheon. Your efforts, and the hardwork of all our volunteers throughout the year, make TEMBO’s work possible.

‘Tis the Season for TEMBO Fundraisers

Our Lady of Fatima Church recently held its 4th annual cranberry sale in support of TEMBO. Thank you to parishioners who volunteered their time to sell homemade cranberry sauce and all those who purchased as well.

Earlier this month, a local book club hosted an evening with well known CTV journalist Craig Oliver. The club had read Mr. Oliver’s autobiography “ Oliver’s Twist” and the evening provided an opportunity for members and their guests to learn more about Mr. Oliver’s life and career. All proceeds from the event were generously donated to TEMBO.

TEMBO’s website is undergoing a bit of a redesign and we are looking for a volunteer to help us create and rearrange some webpages and update our photos.
